Just "released" the first usable version of #Convo, an #XMPP messaging app for #KaiOS and #JioPhone feature phones!

I was hoping to release a more complete version as 1.0, but that's taking a while, and people are already starting to use it as it is (especially with the impending shuttering of #WhatsApp on KaiOS) so I decided to get this out right away

I've also submitted to the #BananaStore, so hopefully it should be out there soon

They still require a phone number as they still do restrict the functionality of their App based off the phone number given!

Also we've all seen that #centralized, #SingleVendor & #SingleProvider solutions are inherently bad - so why should anyone use #Signal over #XMPP+#OMEMO or XMPP+#PGP/MIME ???

#Signal, like every provider in the #USA, is subject to #CloudAct ** and will obviously hand over the #metadata they collected without legitimate interest if told to do so. ***

After all, clients like @monocles ' #monoclesChat **** make XMPP w/ OMEMO and PGP/MIME extremely user-friendly...

Im many juristictions, you cannot legally obtain an anonymous prepaid SIM legally! *****

What is We Distribute, exactly?

We Distribute is a CC-licensed open media project. It serves as a people-focused tech publication, with the goal of informing and educating people about three things:

1. Decentralized Communications
2. User empowerment
3. The future of the Internet

Most of what we do involves reporting on the day-to-day developments of the #Fediverse. In fact, our articles are ActivityPub-enabled, and integrate directly into the network.

However, the Social Web / Decentralized Social movement involves far more efforts and technologies that we think are also worth reporting on: #Matrix, #XMPP, #Bluesky, #Nostr, #SecureScuttlebutt, and #Solid all bring interesting pieces to the puzzle.

Mainstream social media and messaging apps (#Facebook, #WhatsApp, #Instagram etc) are a nightmare for our personal data and freedoms.

We have #FreeSoftware replacements for most of these services but maintaining these services has recurring cost and effort.
